New Eldar Codex First Impressions

Hi all,

Well it's finally here, the new Eldar Codex! I am so excited about this release I have probably been talking about it way too much around my gamer buddies and wore ears off them. But now that it's here at last I would like to write a little bit about my first impressions of the book itself. So stick around and read on!

The Codex

It has to be said GW have done a fantastic job on all the 6th edition codex's written so far. I have bought everyone of them. Maybe I have more money than sense but to be honest I just love reading the fluff and the rules. It's always nice to know what to expect when your opponent fields Daemons or Dark Angels with their new rules.

As with all the previous 6th edition hardback book's it is comprised of 104 pages and takes on the same format as all the previous codex's (Race Background, Timeline, Common special rules, Individual leaders and units back ground and rules, followed by the army section with the points and stats). Even if you are not an Eldar player it's still worth picking up a copy of this because it has some of the most beautiful artwork (just look at that cover) of any of the codex's and if art isn't your thing then the fluff and the background makes up for that.

Chuck Noris to Summarize

To put it in a nutshell as a whole the army got a boost. I know all over the net people are whining that this unit and that unit weren't fixed (Banshee's I'm looking at you!) and some things went up in price and very little came down in price but in the sum of all parts we got a boost not a nerf.

One critical improvement was a boost from BS3 to BS4 across the board. Let me put this into perspective. This is a core stat, not a special rule like Battle Focus or Ancient Doom which I will touch on a bit later but an actual core stat. This vastly improves a whole heap of our Eldar units. I know personally playing a guardian heavy army that I was absolutely ecstatic when I seen this improvement.

Then we have this special rule called Battle Focus. Oh wow is this good or what! We can move and then run and then shoot, or Move and Shoot and then run. This is HUGE. Ok Guardian Shuriken Catapults have a 12" range but you move 6" then Run another 6" with a reroll due to the whole army getting fleet now and then shooting another 12". The whole army basically has a minimum movement of 7" and inches my friends win games especially with an army that requires finesse like the Eldar do.

Ancient doom is a bit more situational as it only works against units with mark of Slannesh. This can be Daemons or Chaos Space Marines. It gives our entire army Hatred against these foes which is great! But we also received -1 to our leadership roles for fear when playing these armies. Still though Hatred is better than -1 LD so I'm happy.

The humble shuriken catapult is not so humble anymore... With BS 4 now more shots will hit their mark, couple this with that every roll to wound of a 6 now counts as AP2, we are going to see a lot more bang for our buck when our opponent starts picking up his models after a round of shooting from our Shuriken wielding Gardeners and Mechanics.

But let's not kid ourselves, the Eldar army itself is for the advanced level of player and that hasn't changed. It's not going to be the next Grey Knights nor is it the new Necron's. Each and every move you make, the consequences must be planned out in advance. It's not a point and click army. If you are new to Eldar I highly advise you speak to an experienced Eldar player to get that much needed little boost to help you at the start. You may find it frustrating at times but the army can be one of the most rewarding when everything comes together and the synergy works.

So overall a thumbs up (Thank you Mr Noris!). I will be reviewing each unit individually and our new Psychic powers in a series of posts over the coming weeks so check back with us here at Wild Serpent regularly because we are as excited as you are!

Space Wolves Aegis Defence Line

Aegis Defence Line Complete

Hey guys,

A little diversion from my usual Eldar chatter but I thought I would share pictures of my finished Aegis Defence Line for my other army, my Space Wolves. Hope you like it :)

How did I do it?

  1. Basecoated with Army Painter Wolf Grey
  2. Washed all pieces completely with Devlan mud making each piece much darker and worn looking.
  3. Used large brush to cover all metal area's with leadbelcher followed by black wash.
  4. Used watered down tin bits paint on the nuts and bolts to give rusty look.
  5. Used shining gold on the Imperial Symbols followed by a black wash and then once that was dry I gave it a heavy wash of Thraka Green to give the copper symbols the appearance of oxidisation from age.
  6. Highlighted the metal with chainmail silver.

Grey Army Syndrome

Grey Army Syndrome

I think we are all guilty of this at some point, a large collection of your favourite models sitting there collecting dust waiting endlessly for some of your love and attention. There is nothing worse, yet we all do this. I have lost count of the amount of times I have bought a single box of miniatures or an Army Codex in the hopes of starting a new army, only for them to sit idle in my bottom drawer.

Only this year I bought the Dark Angels Codex and got some models too and then ended up trading them or selling them. Then I bought the Daemons Codex in the hopes of doing a Khorne Daemon army only to lose interest again and as a result I have a wasted money on Daemon Codex doing nothing. I bought the Chaos Space Marines Codex, I bought a box of Grey Knights, Orcs and Goblins army book and battalion, the list goes on. Heck I even bought an entire 2000pts Logan Wing Terminator Army that is still only half assembled not to mention the Forgeworld Thunderhawk Gunship that is still only partly assembled in its box.

The only army that I bought and assembled and then painted straight away was my Eldar Saim Hann jetbike army. I dunno what it was but if I had to describe the motivation I got during this project it was pure passion for the fictional race itself and the models I truly love. I love their history, their advanced technology, their sleek vehicles and who wouldn't love a space elf army led by a molten daemon running around with a big sword?

There was a national tournament coming up and I had just ordered my entire army. It came in a large cardboard box filled with all my jetbikes and grav tanks. Needless to say it was like Christmas! Straight away I cracked open the boxes and got to work not as a burden but in excitement. Leading up to this I had been telling myself "man I really would love a fully painted army, i'm just sick of making excuses and making false promises". So I had about 6 weeks until this tournament and I was determined to get a fully painted original looking army done by then.

Six weeks later and the army was complete and I was a very proud owner of a 2000pt themed Saim Hann Jetbike army. These days I have so many ongoing projects that I am kinda swamped but I am waiting to rekindle that same passion once the new Eldar codex hits us in June. I am thinking of doing a Ilyanden themed army which should be good.

Until then I am ticking away on various projects notably my Space Wolves and High Elves and the odd addition to my Saim Hann army. Still though, I love playing my Saim Hann army more than ever and can see myself playing it for many years.

If I had to give advice to somebody stuck with a grey army it would be the following:
  • Set yourself a goal like have a fully painted army to bring to an upcoming event like a tournament.
  • If you have an army you don't really like the look of then STOP. I'm telling you now you have already lost. My best advice I could give for this situation is try sell/swap it for an army that you find irresistible.
  • Use anything that makes the project easier, for me it was Army Painter basecoat spray. It's a lifesaver and timesaver!
  • Paint even when you aren't in the mood. I know this is hard but over time when you start seeing your army coming together you will become more enthusiastic than ever.
  • Lastly, batch paint everything. Some people love painting each model individually but if you have a grey army you are a similar type of person to me and trust me you need to batch paint. Stick on Deadliest Catch or The Wire and drone away at this for hours. It pays off in the long run.

Eldar coming in June 2013

Incoming Eldar Codex

I hate to be presumptuous but with all the rumours about Eldar coming out in June it's really hard for some of us not to get excited. After all we are still using a 4th edition codex so we have waited long enough don't you think?!

This rumour compilation is about a year old and has been added to and comes from http://natfka.blogspot.ie/ so thank you Natfka! And in his own word's, please take with lots of salt. Also I have added some stuff that I have heard over the last few months from various sources.

  • Plastic Warpspiders

  • Plastic Shining Spears box set

  • Plastic Phantomwaechter - these might be the shadow spectres?

  • Plastic Jetbikes box of three

  • Plastic Wraithguard

  • Plastic flyer combi-kit - The flyer is pretty large and has a crossbow shape, two canopies, one fin. The main variant on the cover has some lances and a large dorsal distort cannon. The other variant has extra downward/sideway thrusters, but I don’t remember if it has a different weapon loadout.

  • Plastic phoenix lord niadhau - For Shining Spears, appears to be on a Vyper jetbike.

  • Plastic webway gate

  • Resin box Avatar

  • Resin Black Warden - The Black Warden looks like an female Autarch. She has a shuriken catapult and a feathered guardian helm with an eye on it.

  • Resin Dire Avenger Xentarch - Appears to be a new English name for Exarch?

  • Resin Howling Banshee Xentarch

  • Resin Fire Dragon Xentarch

  • Resin Striking Scorpion Xentarch

  • Resin box Dragon Riders - Possibly Exodites?

  • Resin box Eldritch Raiders - They look like guardians but have no helms and wear scarfs around the lower head and swashbuckle belts. They are very individually equipped, have all sorts blades, pistols and/or rifles. (potentially Storm Guardians?)

  • Resin box Halcones Cazadores - Still a mystery

  • Resin Warlock

I have also heard Warp Spiders are getting a Pheonix Lord.

Fingers crossed for all of this!
